Patient education material on Tuberculosis, Asthma and C.O.P.D.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) may be infectious or non-infectious. Infectious disease spreads from one person to other whereas non infectious disease does not spread. Effective anti-Tuberculosis medication makes infectious disease non-infectious within few days. So early diagnosis and treatment is the key to prevent spread of disease. Sputum examination not only confirms the diagnosis but also detect whether disease is infectious or not. Treatment is divided in three categories depending on many factors. Avarage duration of treatment is 6 to 8 months. Regular medication is the key to successful treatment. Anti Tuberculosis drugs are strong drug which can cause side effects like vomiting, jaundice, skin rash etc. Contact your doctor if problem arises. Adhere to your doctorís advice and follow him regularly. Donít make your treatment irregular as TB is difficult to treat after irregular treatment. Balanced diet along with appropriate treatment of associated diseases like diabetes, hypertensions etc are essential.

Asthma commonly known as allergy is a disease of lungs affecting particularly medium size airways. Though congenital in origin it may present any time from 4 yrs to 40 yrs. Recurrent episodes of cough, breathlessness, wheeze (whistling sound coming from chest) particularly at night or after exposure to allergen suggests the diagnosis. Pulmonary function test (PFT) not only confirms the diagnosis of asthma but also helps in categorization of severity of disease. Based on this categorization treatment is planned. Since treatment is lifelong in majority of people type of medication, number of medication and off course side effects of medication do matter. Inhaled form of medication is the best medication for asthma now a days. Main advantages are minimal medication going inside body and so minimal side effects. Drug is delivered where it is required. Other body parts are not exposed to medication thus preventing side effects. Inhaled medication (Inhalers) are safe in elderly patient, pregnancy, heart patients etc Two types of inhalers are available in market: is dry powder inhaler and the other, is meter dose inhaler. Regular medication along with prevention of triggers makes treatment successful. Common triggers are dust, animal dandruff, chemical, paints, perfumes, deodorants, smoke, pollen (Flower), animal dandruff, seasonal variation, some medications. (e.g. painkiller, anti-hypertensive, cough syrups etc). Monitoring of this long term disease is essential and is done with peak flow meter or PFT (Spirometry). Regular medication, avoidance of allergens and regular monitoring of disease process is the key to comfortable life in asthmatic individuals.
